#BreakTheBias starts with us. How do you relate to those around you and how do you interreact with the world at large? The reason biases still exist is because we as human’s rely on them greatly. Rooted in psychology and relating to our instincts has helped us survive thus far. If we can final set aside our old ideas about people and even bias at large, we will be able to create a peaceful and inclusive world.
We can’t break the solid and stone-cold ideas society has set in place if we don’t all do our part. We are currently moving into the digital and cyber tech age. As of late we have all started to pay attention to the media we consume that is becoming bigger and more expansive day by day. To break our biases, we need to start being authentic.
AUTHENTICITY IS IN US ALL
Being real with our audience and showing behind the scenes that may not be as glamorous is the first step design wise your company can make. You can see this become a so called “trend” in the most recent years. People being open about the use of editing programs and being more relatable to their audience. Moving toward showing ourselves in both our company and daily life will lead to understanding and compassion.
MAINSTREAM MEDIA CANNOT REPRESENT US ALL
What we see on our social handles may be related to only one specific content, one that drives sales. Having more unique digital content can create a more diverse representation of the world at large. Seeing only content relating to our search can cut the rest of the world off and narrow our way of thinking. Like the way our news that always portrays the worse of the worse can lead to the world seeming like an inhabitable space.
SEPERATION AND SEGRAGATION
We can easily create categories and alienate people with design and our branding. By marketing dolls to girls or saying blue is for boys. Similarly, like luxury items are always marketed to a target of a specific caliber. We limit ourselves, our companies, and the rest of the world by creating these categories. The narrow-minded thinking and being closed off to different compatibility with your market, allow biases to take root.
MORE INCLUSIVE AND OPEN
To steer our society and create more equal passing between races, sexes, ages, etc. We first need to set aside our conceived notions and stop projecting what we desire onto the consumer. Creating diversity starts with first and foremost what we put out into the world, via graphic or words. Because you have impact, and your voice can the one that people stop and listen to. Think before you create a ripple.
